What was it like to ride a bike before the age of the automobile?
Roads were pitted and full of horse manure. You rang your bell, blew your bugle or whistle and navigated around unwary pedestrians, dogs trying to bite your feet and children playing in the road.
There were constant risks of a large horse carriage or cart coming round the bend toward you in the middle of the road. Some horse riders tried to whip passing cyclists. Female cyclists were also ostracised.
Uphill, you pushed your safety bike until you had to take a rest. Downhill, you put your feet up and coasted ...hopefully stopping in the hedge at the bottom of the hill.
If you enjoy the stories and pictures in Ride Vintage Magazine ...why not buy your own vintage bicycle and travel through time to this fascinating era yourself?
